There are four areas of study in the Healthy Living Program (Health) at every grade level: Healthy Eating, Substance Use & Abuse, Personal Safety and Injury Prevention, and Growth and Development.

In Grade 7, our third unit of study will be on Substance Use and Abuse. According to the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum:

Students will outline a variety of issues related to substance use and abuse (e.g., the effects of second hand smoke; the impact of laws governing drug use, including the use of tobacco and alcohol). They will identify and categorize drugs as stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens. They will also apply and demonstrate decision-making strategies that can be used to counter pressures to smoke, drink, and take drugs. They will apply a decision-making process to make informed choices regarding drug use, and identify healthy alternatives to drug use.

In Grade 8, our third unit of study will be on Substance Use and Abuse. According to the expectations of the Ontario Curriculum:

Students will outline the possible negative consequences of substance use and abuse (e.g., fetal alcohol symdrom, effect of steroid use, accidents, when drinking and driving). They will identify school and community resources that are involved in education about substance use and abuse, and those involved in preventing and treating substance abuse. We will also be discussing the causes and symptoms of stress and positive ways to relieve stress that do not involve substance abuse. Students will also be applying steps of a decision-making process to address age-specific situations related to personal health and well-being in which substance use or abuse is one of the factors.
